Hilton Honors credit card review
The Hilton Honors American Express Card is a premium travel rewards card that benefits frequent travelers.
For purchases, this card gives you 7x points per dollar spent at Hilton and Hilton owned properties, 5x at all US restaurants, supermarkets, and gas stations, and 3x everywhere else. Combined, that leads to fast growth of your points balances so you can earn free nights quickly.
The card comes with no foreign transaction fee and gives you automatic Hilton Honors Silver status. Spend $20,000 in a calendar year to earn Gold status through the end of the next calendar year. That can lead to some nice upgrades for regular Hilton guests!
Hilton Honors credit card rewards and perks
The Hilton credit card primarily offers rewards as Hilton Honors points. Earn up to 7x points per dollar depending on where you spend. You’ll get 7x at Hilton and Hilton portfolio properties, 5x at restaurants, gas stations, and grocery stores in the US, and 3x everywhere else.
Cardholders also get instant complementary upgraded Silver status with this card. If you spend $20,000 on the card in a calendar year, you will get Gold status for the remainder of the year and the following calendar year.
The only major downside is that Hilton points, like most hotel rewards points, are not worth that much. A Hilton point is worth about half a cent while airline and general miles and points cards often give you at least one cent in value per point.
That means earning 5x points at gas stations, restaurants, and grocery stores gives you about 2.5 cents worth of value per dollar you spend. That is well ahead of the 1% cash back many cards offer, but you can do better with some high-end travel rewards cards like the Amex Platinum and Chase Sapphire Reserve.
Hilton Honors credit card credit card benefits
Beyond the card rewards program and status upgrade, this card comes packed with useful benefits for travel and standard purchases.
For travel, start with no foreign transaction fee, often up to 3% with other cards. You also get included car rental loss and damage insurance, travel accident insurance, and access to a 24/7 global travel assistance hotline.
At the checkout counter, benefits like an automatic extended warranty, purchase protection, and return protection come into play. For online shopping, get a free ShopRunner membership for free 2-day shipping at a wide range of online stores.
Hilton Honors credit card costs and fees
This card offers a lot of value to Hilton loyalists, and you get all of these benefits with no annual fee. That is rare for a card with such strong travel and purchase protection benefits.
Interest rates currently vary based on your credit history. Rates can change at any time with market interest rates, and cash advances have a higher variable rate APR than purchases and balance transfers.
If you miss a payment or a payment is returned, a penalty APR kicks in.
While there is no foreign transaction fee, cash advances cost 3% ($5 minimum) per occurrence. Late and returned payments cost up to $38 per occurrence. Just avoid those scenarios and you can avoid the fees.
